Local hotels, family homes and unique properties

At Mater we know that accommodation is much more than a place to sleep. It is an opportunity to experience the local culture. Because of this, our itineraries are designed to stay in local hotels and, whenever possible, have an experience in the family home.

The published price is in standard hotels, but we have options in superior and luxury category hotels. We work with inns, rooms, and charming hotels.

At Mater we always search for alternative activities to those usually chosen by large groups of tourists so that you can have more intimate and authentic experiences, without missing out on the most emblematic places in Argentina.

In this tour we have small groups for activities, for you to have a better experience. You’ll visit the most outstanding places in Ushuaia and El Calafate, accompanied by guides that specialize on local natural heritage. You’ll go to unconventional places, promoting an authentic exchange between responsible travellers and the Patagonian people.

On top of our general sustainability policies (see here), there are some specific sustainable actions we take in this particular tour.

At Cabo San Pablo, a little known place in the Tierra del Fuego island, you’ll visit the beach while the guide explains the importance of protecting the places you visit and their biodiversity. You’ll also visit an estancia that is far from the classic touristic circuit, where the owners will tell you all about their rural life in Southern Patagonia. Additionally, we avoid the use of plastic in meals and buy our lunch boxes from local entrepreneurs.

In Calafate you will visit a local estancia that still works as one (not only for touristic purposes) and learn actively about the different activities they practise, such as sheep shearing. By doing this, we create an atmosphere of cultural exchange in which you’ll get to know the Patagonian pioneers’ customs and their agricultural and breeding practices. You’ll reach the Perito Moreno glacier through an unconventional navigation, helping to prevent overtourism. By doing this, you will also get unique views and reaching the glacier will be an experience itself.

Buenos Aires – El Calafate: 3.30h flight.

Buenos Aires – Ushuaia: 3.30h flight.

El Calafate – Ushuaia: 1.30h flight.

El Calafate – Nibepo Aike Estancia: 1.30h. in a minibus.

The ideal time to take this tour is between October and March (spring or summer) because temperature is more pleasing. Yet, the weather in Patagonia is quite windy and unstable and your can have either slightly hot or very cold days, even during the summer.

Ushuaia’s average annual temperature is 5,7 °C (42.26 ºF). During the summer maximum temperatures go around 20 °C (68 ºF) at daytime, with colder mornings and nights that go to about 10°C (50 ºF).

In El Calafate the average annual temperature is 7,5 °C (45.5) and in January, the warmest time, temperatures go about 15°C (59 ºF) during the day.

You can take a direct flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate or from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia. During the summer, there are also direct flights between Ushuaia and El Calafate every day.

Yes, it is safe. Yet, just like in any destination, we suggest that you pay attention to your belongings, avoid dark and deserted streets (especially at night), and don’t wear jewelry that’s too flashy.

In Ushuaia we suggest that you try centolla (a crab species). You’ll also love to try the cordero patagónico (lamb), and asado (Argentinian barbecue).
